Wearing Your Silk Scarf Snood-Style

Snoods might recently have gained a certain amount of unpopularity with the International FA Board, but for men and women alike these tubular neck scarves have become an indispensible fashion accessory and a must-have to protect against the chill of winter.  The objection to the wearing of snoods in the world of football mainly seems to come down to a macho thing, something which Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson summed up in his statement, ‘Real men don’t wear snoods.’  Many seem to fear that these innocuous accessories are the start of the slippery slope towards footballers wearing skirts!  Arsene Wenger, manager of Arsenal, however, has spoken up for snoods and has even suggested that his players wear them on the advice of his medical team.

The snoods which are worn on the football field, of course, are not quite the same as the ones that many celebrities and ordinary people alike are seen wearing in the street.  If anything, the ones worn by footballers more closely resemble a roll neck on a sweater than a true snood, being much shorter and being made of far less fabric.  They certainly could not be used to cover the head and neck in the same way that modern snoods are capable of being worn and they do not make nearly the same fashion statement.

The three most common ways for snoods to be worn in a fashion sense are just hung loosely around the neck so that they hang down at the front in folds, tucked more tightly up against the neck or pulled up over the top of the head so that they cover both neck and head and resemble a hood.  The ones which can be bought in the stores are typically of a size or style which only allows you to wear them in one of these ways, but by using a women’s silk scarf it is possible to make your own snood and wear it any way that you like.  Because a snood is really nothing more than a tube of material, a long silk scarf can simply be tied at the ends to create a snood effect, and because silk is such a fine fabric, the knot will only be small and can easily be concealed.

To create either of the first two styles mentioned above, simply wrap your women’s silk scarf around and around your neck so that it hangs down over your chest and leaves your throat exposed or so that it sits snugly up against the front of your neck.  When you reach the ends of the material, just tie them off in a knot and position the knot so that it cannot be seen.  If you prefer to cover both neck and head, meanwhile, then place the center of the fabric over the top of your head, bring each side of the material down so that it covers your ears, cross the scarf at the front of your neck and continue to wrap the fabric around your neck, crossing at front and back, until it has all been used up.  Simply tie off with a knot and your snood-style silk scarf will keep you cozy and warm.
